FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — Former New England tight end Aaron Hernandez has been sentenced to life in prison without parole in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd in 2013. Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder and weapons charges in connection with the death. Jurors deliberated for 36 hours over seven days before rendering their decision.
UNDATED (AP) — The New Orleans Pelicans came away with the NBA's final Western Conference playoff berth while helping the Houston Rockets win the Southwest Division and the No. 2 seed in the postseason. Anthony Davis had 31 points and 13 rebounds as the Pelicans downed San Antonio 108-103, pushing the Spurs one game behind the Rockets for the division title. And Brooklyn captured the final Eastern Conference playoff berth by downing Orlando 101-88 before Indiana lost 95-83 to Memphis.
UNDATED (AP) — Duke guard Tyus Jones and Arkansas forward Michael Qualls announced yesterday that they are leaving school early for the NBA draft. Jones led the Blue Devils to the national championship as a freshman last season, averaging 13 points and 4.5 assists in the NCAA tournament. Qualls scored 15.9 points a game as a junior to help the Razorbacks win 27 games and reach the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven years.
UNDATED (AP) — The first night of the Stanley Cup playoffs included a double-overtime contest. Duncan Keith scored the game-winner in the second overtime as the Chicago Blackhawks beat Nashville 4-3. The other games had the New York Islanders topping Washington 4-1, Montreal beating Ottawa 4-3 and Calgary knocking off Vancouver 2-1.
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Bruins have fired general manager Peter Chiarelli (shuh-REH'-lee) after missing the playoffs for the first time in eight years. Chiarelli took the job in 2006 and was the architect of the Bruins' only Stanley Cup since 1972, but the team lost its last two games this season to finish behind Ottawa and Pittsburgh. Bruins president Cam Neely said the front office will leave it up to the new GM to decide what he wants to do with head coach Claude Julien and his staff.
