LAS VEGAS (AP) — Trial has been postponed for an undercover Las Vegas police detective facing a driving under the influence charge after police say a witness reported seeing him asleep at the wheel of a vehicle. Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Karen Bennett-Haron has reset Officer Russell Backman's misdemeanor bench trial for May 28.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — More than 150 firefighters are battling a wildfire on the edge of Northern California's Plumas National Forest about 80 miles northwest of Reno. A Forest Service spokeswoman says no one has been injured and no homes currently are threatened by the blaze that has burned about 185 acres near Genesee Valley. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Athletic Commission is asking state lawmakers to increase taxes on tickets to boxing and mixed martial arts events. The bill would increase fees on ticket sales from 6 to 8 percent and would allow the governor to appoint the head of the Nevada Athletic Commission. The bill would take effect during the next fiscal year, so it wouldn't apply to the upcoming Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather bout in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The National Weather Service and local officials are warning of the possibility of damaging high winds across a wide swath of the Mojave Desert from Las Vegas to Southern California. A wind advisory has been posted until 11 this evening, with forecasters predicting winds of 25 to 35 mph, and gusts to 50 mph in southern Nevada communities from Caliente to Rachel.
