PANAMA CITY (AP) — The leaders of the United States and Cuba have held their first formal meeting in more than half a century. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro sat side by side today in a small conference room in a Panama City convention center, after giving separate speeches at the Summit of the Americas. Obama says he wants to "turn the page" on old divisions, although significant differences between the governments will remain.
CHICAGO (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to launch her campaign for president tomorrow with an online video. Two senior advisers say Clinton's campaign will center on boosting middle-class economic security and broadening opportunities for working families. They say the former senator and secretary of state will try to cast herself as a fighter who can get results in a tough political climate.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Police in Washington, D.C., say a man has fatally shot himself in front of the U.S. Capitol, triggering a two-hour lockdown of the building. Capitol Police say the building has now reopened. Some streets in the area were also closed during the lockdown, which came during Washington's popular annual Cherry Blossom Festival.
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (AP) — A prominent scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory who researched how to store renewable energy has died. Richard Post was 96. Post was an avid inventor who had his name on 34 patents. In recent years, he focused on the goal of storing energy in a flywheel. The Los Angeles Times says Post died Tuesday after a sudden illness.
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A 1774 arrest warrant for Vermont Revolutionary War Hero Ethan Allen and other leaders of the Green Mountain Boys is going on the auction block. Swann Auction Galleries in New York will auction off the partial document on Tuesday. Swann estimates the document is worth between $3,000 and $4,000.
