SUITLAND, Md. (AP) — A guard at the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters in suburban Maryland is hospitalized in extremely critical condition after being shot. Police say he was shot by a man who kidnapped his wife at the Census Bureau campus in Suitland. Officers chased the suspect into nearby Washington D.C., where the suspect and an officer were wounded.

NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina (AP) — The chief of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says investigators and crime scene technicians from his agency immediately saw inconsistencies when they arrived at the scene where a white North Charleston police officer fatally shot an unarmed black resident on Saturday. Chief Mark Keel says a cellphone video of the shooting confirmed their suspicions.

HESPERIA, Calif. (AP) — A sheriff in California is ordering an investigation after deputies were recorded beating and kicking a man who fled in a car and then on horseback. San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon calls video of Thursday's confrontation disturbing. The sheriff's department says deputies had tried to serve an identity-theft warrant on an Apple Valley man..

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Death penalty states are scrambling for alternatives to lethal injection amid a shortage of deadly drugs. Oklahoma legislators think they've found a foolproof and humane method — nitrogen gas hypoxia. The Senate approved it today and sent the governor a bill that would allow it to be used if lethal injection is ruled unconstitutional or if deadly drugs become unavailable.

CHICAGO (AP) — A storm system is creating havoc in the Midwest. At least one large tornado touched down tonight in central Illinois, and authorities say initial reports indicate there's significant damage in the town of Hillcrest, about 80 miles west of Chicago. There are no reports of injuries. There are other tornado sightings as well. The system is packing hail and damaging winds.
