SUITLAND, Md. (AP) — A fire official says a guard at the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters outside Washington has been shot and critically wounded. A Prince George's County, Maryland, Fire Department spokesman says the guard, who was at one of the campus's gates, had a gunshot wound to his upper body and was taken to a local hospital in extremely critical condition.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A newly released police video from the dashboard of white police Officer Michael Slager's cruiser shows the traffic stop in North Charleston, South Carolina, that eventually led to the shooting death of a black motorist. It was a strikingly benign encounter but changed within minutes as the driver, Walter Scott, takes off running and the officer runs after him.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Texas prison officials have executed a man convicted in the slaying of a Dallas-area police officer during a 2002 shootout that followed the killing of a customer outside a convenience store. Kent Sprouse, who was given a lethal injection tonight, became the fifth convicted killer put to death this year in Texas, the nation's most active death penalty state.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's prison director says he'll fire someone if needed after he investigates the death of a 62-year-old Spanish-speaking inmate who went without dialysis for two days when providers failed to show up for treatment. Ramon Estrada, a native of Mexico, did not get treatment on Friday and Saturday and died Sunday. He would have been paroled on April 21.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A private detective arrested two years ago in Wisconsin is claiming he spied for the Church of Scientology on the father of the church's leader. In 2013, Dwayne Powell told police in West Allis that the church paid him $10,000 a week over 1 ½ years to spy full-time on Ronald Miscavige Sr., who had broken with the Southern California-based church.
