SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Things are quiet in the falcon nest atop the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1JorfcW) that the female peregrine falcon is suffering from a respiratory fungus with a 50 percent survival rate and the male is missing and possibly dead.
Utah Division of Wildlife Resources employee Bob Walters said the female appears to be the same falcon that has raised 11 babies in the nest since 2011.
After hearing about the female, a woman called DWR to report that she had recently buried a hawk-like bird that slammed into the Wells Fargo Center.
Walters said the bird was a male peregrine falcon but it would be difficult to determine if he was the female's mate.
He said another male falcon might take over the open territory in Temple Square.
