LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Sen. Rand Paul is entering the campaign for the Republican presidential nomination -- saying he wants to "return our country to the principles of liberty and limited government." The message was posted on his website in advance of a kickoff speech later today in his home state of Kentucky. He's just the second fully declared candidate, but could face as many as 20 rivals for the nomination before the caucuses begin early next year.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has been hosting Christian leaders for a White House prayer breakfast today -- taking a mild poke at some of his critics in his remarks that otherwise had an Easter theme. Obama said Christians are supposed to love all their neighbors. But he said he sometimes hears "less-than-loving expressions by Christians," and that concerns him. He quickly added, "But that's a topic for another day."
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — A small plane with five people on board has crashed near the city of Bloomington in central Illinois. The Chicago Tribune quotes the father-in-law of one of those on board as saying all five were killed while returning from the NCAA basketball championship in Indianapolis. The Federal Aviation Administration says the Cessna took off from Indianapolis and crashed just short of the Bloomington airport after midnight.
FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — A lawyer for former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez has told jurors that there is only one possible and lawful verdict in his client's murder trial: not guilty. Defense attorney James Sultan began his closing arguments this morning in the trial, which has lasted more than two months. Hernandez is accused of the June 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of his fiancee. Jurors are expected to get the case later Tuesday.
NEW YORK (AP) — Singer-songwriter Don McLean's original manuscript and notes to "American Pie" have sold at auction for $1.2 million. McLean offered the wistful anthem that asks "Do you recall what was revealed the day the music died?" at Christie's today. The 16 pages include the original working manuscript and typed drafts of the song. The 8-minute-long "American Pie" was released in 1971. It was a No. 1 U.S. hit for four weeks.
