PARIS (AP) — Preliminary readings from the second "black box" on the German jetliner that crashed March 24 are startling. French investigators say the co-pilot repeatedly accelerated the plane before it slammed into the French Alps. The flight data recorder was found buried in debris scattered along a mountainside ravine. France's investigative agency says it will continue studying the black box for more complete details of what happened.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Gay-rights activists plan to rally in Indianapolis this Final Four weekend to call for an Indiana law that specifically bars discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The event follows widespread criticism over an Indiana religious rights law that critics said could allow discrimination against gays. Lawmakers modified the law.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A man who spent nearly 30 years on Alabama's death row is free today. Prosecutors acknowledged that the only evidence they had against Ray Hinton couldn't prove he committed the crime. His sisters sobbed "thank you Jesus" as they wrapped their arms around him outside a jail in Birmingham. The head of the state's Equal Justice Initiative says the case tainted by racial bias. Hinton is African-American.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — Gun control advocate Sarah Kemp Brady has died. Brady became an activist for after her husband James was shot in the head in the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. In an email, relatives said Brady died today in a retirement community in Alexandria, Virginia, after battling pneumonia. She was 73. James Brady died last year.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — A sailor who spent 66 days adrift in the Atlantic has left a Virginia hospital and is in pretty good shape. Louis Jordan says he caught rainwater in a bucket and netted fish attracted to the laundry he hung over the side. Jordan says he also prayed fervently for help. He was found on his capsized sailboat by a German freighter and brought ashore by the Coast Guard.
