Stockholm (dpa) - Veteran journalist Carl-Adam Nycop, a pioneering editor and co-founder of Swedish tabloid Expressen, died Tuesday aged 97, the newspaper reported.

Finnish-born Nycop began his journalistic career in the 1930s as Helsinki correspondent for Swedish sports paper Idrottsbladet. At the end of the decade he moved to Sweden and began a storied career in Swedish newspaper and magazine publishing.

Between 1938 and 1944 Nycop was the first editor-in-chief of Se, a Swedish-version of Life magazine.

He was then tapped by Albert Bonnier Jr of the publishing family Bonnier to set up the hard-hitting Expressen in 1944, aimed at offering an alternative to pro-Nazi rival Aftonbladet.

"He had tremendous vision. Carl-Adam Nycop created the modern tabloid back in 1944," current Expressen editor-in-chief Otto Sjoberg said.

Nycop was inspired by Anglo-Saxon journalism and publishing ideals, aiming to present well-written articles in plain language, along with vivid news photos and graphics.

He even grew a moustache in the 1930s since that was common among famed American journalists in those days.

He did not shave it off until January 1959 when Expressen became Sweden's largest-selling newspaper, but in an interview in connection with his 95th birthday Nycop said he quickly regrew the moustache because he felt he "looked childish without it."

Nycop left Expressen in 1962, and held various posts within the Bonnier publishing house before he was hired as a media advisor for the Social Democrats in 1974.

He published several books including his memoirs and often contributed his views on media and publishing - including the risk tabloids faced when focusing on celebrities rather than news.
