SEYNE-LES-ALPES, France (AP) — So far, the cockpit voice recorder from the German plane that crashed in the French Alps yesterday is yielding no clues as to what caused the crash. A French investigator says an audio file was recovered today, and it included sounds and voices. But he says it's too early to draw any conclusions on the cause of the crash that killed all 150 people on board.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Friends, colleagues and family members are mourning the loss of an American woman and her adult daughter who were among the 150 people killed in yesterday's plane crash in the French Alps. They identify the mother as Yvonne Selke of Virginia, and say she was traveling with her daughter Emily, a recent college graduate. According to a person close to the family, Yvonne Selke worked under a contract with the Pentagon's satellite mapping office. Colleagues describe her as a diligent and generous worker who regularly brought cookies for her co-workers.
VININGS, Ga. (AP) — Authorities in suburban Atlanta are investigating a fatal shooting by police. They say a man drove a Maserati toward officers from the Smyrna police department who then opened fire on the car, killing the suspect. Police have said officers were trying to serve a warrant on the man. But witnesses dispute the police account. One woman tells a TV station (WSB) that the car was stuck against a curb when police opened fire from behind it.
INKSTER, Mich. (AP) — There's been an angry protest today outside the police headquarters in the Detroit suburb Inkster, Michigan. A pastor leading the protest threatened to shut down the city until two white police officers are fired for the arrest of a black man who was pulled from his car and repeatedly punched in the head. A TV station (WDIV) yesterday aired police video of the January arrest of Floyd Dent -- whose head and shirt were bloody. The police chief says Michigan State Police will investigate the arrest.
DETROIT (AP) — Autopsies are scheduled to be performed tomorrow on two children found in a deep freezer in their Detroit apartment yesterday. However, the Wayne County medical examiner's office says the bodies of the 14-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother must thaw first. Court officers found the bodies Tuesday while serving an eviction notice on the family's home. Police arrested the children's 35-year-old mother on undisclosed preliminary charges. Neighbors said they hadn't seen the dead children in about a year.
