NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say seven children, age 5 to 15, have been killed and two people critically injured in an early-morning fire at a Brooklyn residence. The children are believed to be family members. Firefighters received a call just after midnight at a private dwelling. Officials say the fire marshal's office is investigating.
KENNER, La. (AP) — Authorities are investigating an attack at New Orleans international airport that resulted in the shooting of the alleged attacker near a checkpoint. Officials say Richard White approached the airport security checkpoint, spraying wasp killer and swing a machete at TSA agents and passengers. He was eventually shot three times and underwent surgery at a hospital. There were no other major injuries.
NEW YORK (AP) — The government now has two months to decide whether to appeal a federal judge's ruling that photographs showing abuse of detainees in Iraq and Afghanistan must be released. The long-running clash over letting the world see potentially disturbing images of how the military treated prisoners began in 2004, when the ACLU sued.
PORT GIBSON, Miss. (AP) —Investigators in Mississippi are holding off on saying whether a man found hanged was killed or took his own life, pending autopsy results. The body of Otis Byrd has been sent from a state crime lab to a funeral home, but the FBI says it will be days before autopsy results are complete. Officials are urging people to be patient. Byrd found not far from where he lived.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A disagreement over an anti-abortion provision is threatening to scuttle legislation to help the victims of sex trafficking, which the vast majority of the Senate favors. Democrats are insisting Republicans remove a provision that limits abortion funding. Republicans are refusing to do so and demanding that Democrats back down.
