ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — NFL free agent running back Chris Johnson will not face charges following an arrest on a misdemeanor weapons charge.
Angela Starke, spokeswoman for the state attorney's office in Orlando, wrote in an email Thursday that it decided not to file charges in the January arrest for openly carrying a weapon. Starke said "the evidence was not suitable for prosecution."
Johnson was pulled over for running a stop sign, and when an officer approached his vehicle he saw a firearm between Johnson's feet.
In a separate incident, Johnson was shot in the right shoulder during a drive-by shooting in Orlando earlier this month that left a friend with bullet wounds and the driver of their car dead.
The Jets announced last month they would not exercise their option on Johnson, making him an unrestricted free agent.
