SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The state Senate has approved a proposal to study the use of force by Utah police officers.
Senators voted 26-0 on Monday night to advance the bill. It moves to the House for a vote.
The bill would task an existing legislative committee with the review of law enforcement policies when police officers use their guns and use force in other ways.
The committee would also issue a final report with recommendations before the end of November.
Draper Republican Sen. Howard Stephenson sponsors the measure and says law enforcement supports the idea of a review.
He says it will give the public reassurance that there are procedures in place for training and investigations of police use of force.
