TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Southern Idaho authorities say a man who parachuted off a bridge into the Snake River Canyon has died after his parachute didn't open properly.
Twin Falls County Sheriff's spokeswoman Lori Stewart said 32-year-old Bryan Turner died at a local hospital Monday afternoon.
Turner had jumped from the Perrine Bridge earlier that day. The Twin Falls Sheriff's Office said friends and nearby kayakers pulled him from the Snake River and began resuscitation efforts until emergency workers arrived.
Stewart said Turner was from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, but was currently living in New York City.
The Perrine Bridge spans the 486-foot-deep canyon and is a favorite spot for BASE jumpers. BASE stands for building, antenna, span and earth, the types of places from which BASE jumpers leap.
Though BASE jumping is illegal in many places, it's allowed year-round without a permit at the Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, and hundreds of people jump from the bridge every year.
But the sport can be exceedingly dangerous. Two people were badly injured in a fall from the Perrine bridge last year after they apparently lost their balance during a jump and became entangled. Three people died in BASE jumping accidents in Zion National Park in Utah last year, and earlier this year a 31-year-old man plunged 1,000 feet to his death when his parachute failed to open after he jumped from a TV tower in Michigan.
