ELON, N.C. (AP) — Officials at Elon University have suspended new-member activity at Kappa Sigma fraternity after 17 new members were cited for trespassing in a Virginia cemetery.
The Times-News of Burlington reports (http://bit.ly/1GrWghp) school spokesman Dan Anderson said police in Abingdon, Virginia, reported to the university that a group of fraternity members were caught trespassing in a cemetery where the fraternity's founder is buried.
Anderson said the students said they were there to pay respects and that there was no property damage to the cemetery.
According to Anderson, the fraternity itself is not suspended.
In February, the university announced an investigation into reports of hazing by Pi Kappa Phi fraternity in its new member education program. The university suspended all the fraternity's operations and activities pending the outcome of the investigation.
