TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Alex Rodriguez went 1 for 2 in his first game back after a year-long suspension. Rodriguez, who turns 40 mid-season, served as the designated hitter in the Yankees' exhibition game against the Phillies. His lone hit came in his first at bat when he lined the ball to left.
DETROIT (AP) — Former American League batting champ Alex Johnson has passed away at the age of 72. Johnson won the award in 1970 when he hit .329 playing for the old California Angels. He played for eight teams in his 13-year career including the Angels, Tigers, Phillies, Cardinals, Reds, Indians, Rangers and Yankees.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A deal has been worked out between the Vikings and Bills that sends quarterback Matt Cassel (KAS'-uhl) to Buffalo for an undisclosed draft pick. Despite the fact the Vikings made the announcement, the trade cannot be completed until next week with the start of the new league year.
HOUSTON (AP) — The top teams in the NBA's Southwest Division are meeting tonight in Houston. The Rockets start the day trailing first-place Memphis by 1 ½ games. Houston's high-scoring guard James Harden will be back with the team after serving a one-game suspension for kicking LeBron James in the groin during a game.
BOSTON (AP) — The trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) is underway in Boston. He is the man charged with planting a backpack with a bomb inside during the Boston Marathon in 2013. In her opening comments defense attorney Judy Clarke admitted her client committed the crime but that she will show he was persuaded to take part in the plot by his older brother.
