WASHINGTON (AP) — Bill Schweitzer, a lawyer for the American League and Major League Baseball for more than two decades, died Tuesday. He was 70.
Schweitzer's death was announced by BakerHostetler, the law firm he had worked for since 1973. He was managing partner of the firm's Washington office from 1993-09. No cause of death was given.
MLB said Schweitzer's death was sudden. Schweitzer was an adviser to former baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and his successor, Rob Manfred, and headed baseball's government relations.
Selig said in a statement that "his counsel was vital toward navigating our way through many challenges that the game once faced."
