COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — People who use the historic College Park Airport say they fear its future is endangered by construction of tall buildings near the runways.
The airport opened in 1909 and is home to many aviation firsts. It was even used by the Wright brothers.
Pilots already have to navigate around a 16-story apartment building for University of Maryland students. It's just over a mile away on a straight shot from the runway. Now, there are plans to build a 13-story hotel less than a mile from the airport.
Pilot Kurt Schneckenburger has been flying from the airport since 1986. He tells The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/knqrboj) that you can't "build a wall" around the airport without compromising safety.
