ELKO, Nev. (AP) — A judge in Elko has postponed a preliminary hearing into next month for a man accused of severely beating a 5-year-old girl. The Elko Daily Free Press reports a judge this week reset Danny Miller Jr.'s hearing for March 20. Police say the girl suffered fractures to her skull, neck and jaw. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A bill that promises more money for school construction but would suspend wage rules favored by Democrats is set for its first hearing in the Nevada Assembly. The measure sailed through the Republican-controlled Senate on party lines, but is expected to hit bumps in an Assembly Government Affairs Committee hearing today.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada high school graduates who are fluent in a second language would be able to prove it on their diploma, under a bill being proposed by state lawmakers. The bill would add a special seal to the diplomas of bilingual graduates, showing they had a 2.0 or above grade average in English and demonstrated proficiency in a second language.
ELKO, Nev. (AP) — The Elko City Council has settled on a Utah firm to build the town's new police station. Community Development Manager Jeremy Draper tells the Elko Daily Free Press construction should begin in late March or early April and could be completed by the end of the year. City officials have been discussing the need for a new police facility for nine years.
