OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Federal investigators say they're aren't sure why the driver of a produce pickup truck stopped on railroad tracks and walked away, right before a train plowed into the vehicle yesterday in Oxnard, California. The fiery collision left dozens of people injured, eight seriously enough to be admitted to a hospital. Authorities have arrested 54-year-old Jose Alejandro Sanchez-Ramirez, who police say was found 45 minutes after the crash, more than a mile away.
STAFFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Utility workers are restoring service to a New Jersey neighborhood after a natural gas explosion blew apart one home and injured 15 people, two of them critically. Residents in about 300 homes in Stafford Township have spent two mornings without heat and temperatures have been in the teens. Gas crews had gone to the home Tuesday following a report of a strong natural gas smell and a police car's dash cam recorded the explosion. The home was unoccupied and undergoing renovations.
UNDATED (AP) — Forecasters say a mix of rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain across the southeastern U.S. should let up tonight into early Thursday. The National Weather Service says the wintry mix is expected to affect portions of the eastern Carolinas and officials already have declared states of emergencies and have closed schools for today. Also, below average temperatures are expected to continue for much of the Central and Eastern U.S.
BERLIN (AP) — The World Health Organization is telling Europe to step up measles vaccination efforts. The WHO says cases in Europe and Central Asia fell by half from 2013 to 2014 but the goal is to eliminate measles this year in those places. Health officials say seven countries have reported a total of more than 22,000 cases since the beginning of last year.
KRAKOW, Poland (AP) — Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski has appeared in a court in Poland today for a hearing on a U.S. request that he be extradited in a 38-year-old sexual assault case. Polanski pleaded guilty in 1977 to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl, but fled the U.S. right before he was to be sentenced. Today, the Polish judge scheduled another hearing, possible for April. The 81-year-old has avoided extradition to the U.S. by traveling only between France, Poland and Switzerland.
