TORONTO (AP) — Canadian Justice Minister Peter MacKay says a foiled plot to attack a Nova Scotia shopping mall was conceived by "murderous misfits," not Islamic terrorists. Police say a 19-year-old man and a 23-year-old Illinois woman intended to kill as many people as they could at a Halifax mall today, then commit suicide. An official tells The Associated Press that the male suspect shot himself to death after police surrounded his home, and the woman was arrested and confessed to the plot.

SVITLODARSK, Ukraine (AP) — Fighting is raging in eastern Ukraine in the hours before a cease-fire is to take effect. Under an agreement reached Thursday, the warring sides are to stop firing at midnight, their time. Diplomats say the U.N. Security Council is expected to meet tomorrow to vote on a resolution being circulated by Russia that endorses the cease-fire agreement and calls on all parties involved to fully carry it out.

BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) — Witnesses say dozens of Boko Haram (BOH'-koh hah-RAHM') insurgents are engaged in heavy fighting with soldiers after attacking a town in northeastern Nigeria. The witnesses say the military responded with ground troops and air force jets after a convoy of Islamic extremists approached the town, which has come under attack multiple times.

LONDON (AP) — British police have arrested a 32 year-old man in east London on suspicion of being a member or supporter of the Islamic State group. Police say the man was collecting information that could be useful to someone preparing acts of terror. He was being questioned at a police station in south London.

BOSTON (AP) — A blizzard warning takes effect this afternoon for coastal areas from Connecticut to Maine. The National Weather Service says about a foot of snow could fall in Boston and up to two feet in parts of Maine. Wind gusts of 60 mph or more could blow snow make travel dangerous. It will be the fourth major storm the region has seen in less than a month.
