CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A research group says West Virginia has the highest ratio of low-income students eating breakfast and lunch at their schools.

The analysis is from the Food Research and Action Center and its "Breakfast Scorecard."

In 2014, West Virginia served 20.1 million public school breakfasts, feeding an average of 117,000 students daily.

Fifty-five percent of all schools in West Virginia serve breakfast and lunch to all students with no additional charge.

The West Virginia Department of Education's Office of Child Nutrition has been focused on increasing school breakfast participation.

Superintendent of Schools Michael Martirano says it's important that students are "well fed and ready to learn."
