Venus Williams, the defending Wimbledon champion, survived a major scare in the second round before recovering her composure to see off fellow American Lisa Raymond on Thursday.

Williams had to serve to stay in the match at 5-2 and a set down but got her game together to win 6-7 (4/7), 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 48 minutes on Court One.

The three-time Wimbledon singles title winner now faces Serbian 26th seed Jelena Jankovic in the third round.
