NEW YORK (AP) — Star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers will miss at least three weeks after being hit in the throat by a shot last weekend.

The Rangers said Friday that Lundqvist sustained a vascular injury last Saturday. The team said it is talking to medical experts about his recovery.

Lundqvist was hurt when he was struck by a shot from Carolina's Brad Malone in the second period at Madison Square Garden. The three-time All-Star goalie was knocked backward onto the ice and kicked his legs, and the training staff checked him. Lundqvist stayed in the game and finished with 31 saves as the Rangers won.

The 32-year-old Lundqvist made 33 saves Monday night in a win over Florida. He sat out Wednesday night and backup Cam Talbot played the whole way in a victory over Boston.

The Rangers also have brought up 20-year-old goaltender Mackenzie Skapski from Hartford of the AHL, just in case.

Lundqvist is 25-11-3 with a 2.25 goals-against average this season. The Rangers are tied with Washington for third place in the Metropolitan Division.

Lundqvist has played in three Olympics for Sweden. He is in the midst of a $59.5 million, seven-year contract that runs through the 2020-21 season.
