BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Jaylin Airington, Aly Ahmed and Kevin Mays combined for 51 points and Cal State Bakersfield held on for a 72-69 win over Utah Valley State Thursday night.
The Roadrunners (9-14, 4-3 WAC) built a nine-point lead at intermission and took a 10-point lead on Javonte Maynor's 3-pointer with 2:38 left.
But Utah Valley State roared back. Zach Nelson and Donte Williams sandwiched 3-pointers around a Bakersfield field goal to make it 67-61. The Roadrunners pushed the lead back to 71-63 by knocking down 4 of 6 free throw attempts, but Nelson buried back-to-back 3-pointers, the second with :02 left.
Airington finished with 19 points, hitting 3 of 3 from beyond the arc. Ahmed added 17 points, converting 7 of 10 from the line, and Mays contributed 15 points as the Roadrunners won their fourth straight.
Nelson finished with 26 points to lead the Wolverines (8-13, 3-4). Mitch Bruneel and Marcel Davis each added 13 points.
