NEW YORK (AP) — New York City is simplifying its pre-kindergarten enrollment process by providing one application form for schools and community-based organizations.
Some 53,000 children are enrolled in full-day pre-K this year. Mayor Bill de Blasio has promised to expand the program to serve 73,000 children next fall.
Some parents of this year's pre-K students had to apply more than once. There was one process for public schools and another one for the community-based organizations that are under contract to provide publicly funded pre-K.
Chancellor Carmen Farina (Fah-REEN'-yah) announced the new application process Thursday.
Parents will list up to 12 pre-K choices on one form. They will receive an offer from one school or community-based organization in early June.
The application process starts March 16 and the deadline to apply is April 24.
