BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho State Police officials say it's getting harder to hire officers from outside the state that also meet Idaho's strict anti-marijuana use criteria. An ISP spokesman says the lax marijuana laws in states like Washington and Utah have narrowed the pool of eligible recruits looking to move to Idaho. Democratic Sen. Grant Burgoyne of Boise says the state's rules should be tweaked to stay competitive.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A defense attorney for one of two men charged with committing a federal hate crime argues that the fight that led to the charge was simply a barroom brawl, not a racially motivated attack. Prosecutors say Beau Hansen and Jonathan Henery, who are both white, yelled racial slurs while they assaulted a black man at a Boise strip club. Derrick Lewis, a black man, told jurors he was looking for a lost piece of his cellphone headset when the other two men attacked him.
MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho (AP) — Police in south-central Idaho are investigating the death of a 38-year-old woman found not breathing in a garage and bleeding profusely from her abdominal area. Mountain Home Police say they were told that the woman was on the phone with a relative cleaning a gun when the shooting occurred. No foul play is suspected.
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A northern Idaho investment adviser who stole more than $800,000 from an 88-year-old woman has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for wire fraud. Sixty-three-year-old JoAnn Jackson of Coeur d'Alene pleaded guilty in November in federal court to two counts of wire fraud.
