PHOENIX (AP) — Carefree's mayor has announced his resignation after being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease.

In a resignation letter Wednesday to Carefree residents and town officials, David Schwan says he was having increasing difficulty in fulfilling the duties and obligations of the office of mayor.

Schwan has been Carefree's mayor since 2009.

He told the Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/1ubozw0) that he received the diagnosis last week.
