AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — The killing of a Jordanian pilot by the Islamic State group may have happened weeks ago. A video released online today purportedly shows the pilot being burned to death. And a scroll on Jordanian TV says the pilot was killed on January 3rd. Just last week, Jordan had expressed a willingness to release an al-Qaida prisoner in exchange for the pilot, but it wanted assurances that the pilot was still alive.
PARIS (AP) — French officials say the suspect in today's stabbing attack on three French soldiers outside a Jewish community center had recently tried to go to Turkey. That's been a transit point for jihadis from Europe who want to join Islamic extremist groups fighting in Syria and Iraq. They say they alerted Turkish authorities, and he was sent back home. But French prosecutors weren't able to turn up enough evidence to begin a legal case against him. He and a suspected accomplice are now in custody.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats are blocking action on a measure that provides funding for the Department of Homeland Security -- because it also rolls back President Barack Obama's moves to prevent millions of immigrants from being deported. Democrats say they're happy to provide funds for the department, and to debate immigration, but that the two issues should be dealt with separately. Republicans say the Democrats are blocking needed funding in a time of terrorism.
FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — The judge overseeing the murder trial of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez has removed a juror from the case. She says there was evidence that the woman had spoken about the case in the last few years, and that she had an early interest in being seated on the panel. The judge found evidence that the juror had specifically discussed an opinion about the case -- including that it would be hard to convict Hernandez without the murder weapon.
DENVER (AP) — Federal investigators say selfies were a likely factor in a small plane crash near Denver last year that killed two. The National Transportation Safety Board says it appears likely the pilot was disoriented and lost control of the airplane. Recordings from a GoPro camera found in the wreckage show the pilot and passenger repeatedly taking photographs of themselves with their cellphones during previous flights that day, although there was no video of the deadly flight.
