WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is releasing his $4 trillion budget proposal tomorrow, which is seen as an opening bid for some long-shot compromises. Republicans have already dismissed much of Obama's proposal, including a blend of tax hikes and spending increases. But the GOP must eventually come to terms with the president, who wields veto power.
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — The largest city in northeast Nigeria is taking another pounding today from Islamic extremists. Witnesses say Boko Haram (BOH'-koh hah-RAHM') insurgents are hitting Maiduguri from four fronts, including artillery and rocket fire. It's the third attack on the city in a week. African leaders at a summit yesterday authorized the creation of a 7,500-strong force from Nigeria and its four neighbors to confront the spreading uprising.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Two Americans shot at in Saudi Arabia on Friday work for a U.S. defense contractor. Vinnell Arabia said in a brief statement today that both of the Americans were wounded in the shooting, the second such incident for the company in less than four months. Vinnell Arabia is partly owned by Northrop Grumman Corp.
BAGHDAD (AP) — The United Nations mission to Iraq says Iraqis, including civilians and security forces, continue to die in large numbers amid the war against the extremist Islamic State group. The U.N. Assistance Mission in Iraq, known as UNAMI, says the violence killed at least 1,375 people in January, including 790 civilians. The mission says it's figures should be considered bare minimum.
CHICAGO (AP) — The roughly 11,000 U.S. troops left in Afghanistan are in line for a special Super Bowl treat. Pizzas4Patriots.com is teaming with Rich Foods and DHL to send 5,000 pies to American service members as a special treat. Retired Air Force Master Sergeant Mark Evans started the charity in 2008. The pizzas are frozen, packed in dry ice, cooked once they arrive in Afghanistan and distributed to various bases.
