BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho House State Affairs Committee has voted 13-4 along party lines not to advance a bill that would create protections in the state for gays and lesbians. Conservative Republicans voted to keep the bill in the committee. Gay rights advocates had been trying for nearly a decade to get the issue before lawmakers.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Sherri Ybarra says she wants local school officials to decide how money should be spent in the classroom. During her first budget presentation to the Legislature, Ybarra asked for $87.3 million more for public schools, a 6.4 percent increase over last year.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Former Idaho Gov. Cecil Andrus says a scaled-back version of a central Idaho wilderness bill being put together by U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson doesn't offer enough protection. The Idaho Statesman reports Andrus favors having President Barack Obama use his executive power under the Antiquities Act to create a 592,000-acre national monument that includes the rugged Boulder and White Cloud mountains.
LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — A Lewiston judge is considering a request to release the medical history of a 2-year-old child who prosecutors say died of internal bleeding after being struck by her baby sitter. The Lewiston Tribune reports that Natasha Hodges' defense attorney wants access to medical records for 2-year-old Rylee Mingo, as well as her sister and the emergency room doctor who treated her.
