SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is expected to make a pitch for his Medicaid expansion plan during his 2015 State of the State address tonight. The Republican governor spent months negotiating a tentative deal with the federal government that would help thousands of Utah's poor get private health insurance.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A proposal requiring Utah high school students to pass the U.S. citizenship test in order to graduate received has cleared its first hurdle at the state Legislature. Six members of the Legislature's Senate Education Committee unanimously approved the measure yesterday afternoon. Utah is one of 15 states expected to consider the measure this year.

SPRINGVILLE, Utah (AP) — Investigators have concluded that five members of a Springville family died after ingesting methadone, heroin or a combination of drugs. Benjamin and Kristi Strack and three of their four children died last September. Springville Police Chief J. Scott Finlayson says the parents told friends they were concerned about a pending apocalypse.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Deseret News CEO Clark Gilbert has been named the new president of Brigham Young University-Idaho. The selection of Gilbert was announced yesterday during a devotional at BYU-Idaho's campus in Rexburg, Idaho. Gilbert becomes the 16th president of the Mormon-owned school, and will take over for Kim B. Clark in April.
