OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The head of the Department of Hand Surgery at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City will serve as the 72nd president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
Dr. Ghazi Rayan will assume his responsibilities in 2017. Rayan has served as a council member for the group for eight years and will be the first Oklahoman to be elected to the presidential line.
The American Society for Surgery of the Hand was established after World War II by a group of surgeons from the armed forces. They wanted to build upon the knowledge gained treating soldiers' hand injuries and explore how to care for injuries of the complicated and delicate hand.
The society has grown from just 35 surgeons to more than 3,500 members around the world.
