LOS ANGELES (AP) — Travis Hammonds scored 11 of his season-high 16 points in the final 5:45, and senior David Samuels grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to help Long Beach State beat Cal State-Northridge 64-58 on Saturday night.
Mike Caffey had 14 points and five assists for Long Beach State (10-11, 4-1 Big West) and Tyler Lamb scored 10 with four steals.
Caffey made 1 of 2 free throws with 27 seconds left to give the 49ers a 61-55 lead.
Six seconds later Aaron Parks made a 3 to pull Northridge (6-15, 2-4) within three, but the Matadors wouldn't score again.
Northridge made just 5 of 24 (20.8 percent) field goals and committed 11 turnovers in the first half.
Long Beach State led 28-18 at halftime.
Stephen Maxwell had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Northridge, which shot 27.8 percent overall and made just 5 of 17 from 3-point range.
