DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — The conflict between pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine and government forces has spiraled again despite international efforts to reduce the killing. The main separatist leader in the rebellious Donetsk region says he won't take part in anymore peace talks and plans to push Ukrainian soldiers out of the area. There have been repeated cease-fire violations by both sides.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has agreed to review whether the sedative midazolam (mih-DAY'-zoh-lam) can be used in executions. There are concerns that it does not produce a deep, comalike unconsciousness and ensure that a prisoner does not experience intense and needless pain when other drugs are injected to kill him. The order came eight days after the court refused to halt the execution of an Oklahoma man that employed the same combination of drugs. The appeal was brought to the court by four Oklahoma death row inmates.
BRIDGETON, N.J. (AP) — Religious leaders, a civil rights group and local officials say they have confidence in an investigation into a fatal police shooting at a traffic stop that was captured by a patrol car camera. Video of the Dec. 30 shooting of Jerame Reid was released this week. It shows he was shot by two Bridgeton Police Department officers, one black and one white. Reid was told not to move, but got out of a car with his hands raised. Some community activists are calling for an outside review of the case.
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — More than 90 potential jurors have been released during the fourth day of jury selection in the Colorado theater shooting case. Twelve other people were released for a variety of reasons, including health issues, a dying family member and language problems. An unprecedented 9,000 possible jurors were summoned in the case. James Holmes is charged with killing 12 people and injuring 70 others in the July 2012 assault at a Denver-area theater.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health regulators have approved a second vaccine to prevent a strain of bacteria that can cause deadly cases of meningitis. The Food and Drug Administration has cleared Novartis' Bexsero vaccine against a subtype of meningococcal bacteria in people ages 10 to 25. The agency cleared a similar vaccine from Pfizer last October.
