BOISE, Idaho (AP) — State officials have set up a quarantine zone in southwest Idaho to restrict the movement of eggs, poultry and poultry products after confirming avian influenza in the area.
The Idaho Department of Agriculture announced the quarantine Thursday in Canyon County.
State officials say that on Jan. 8 they identified a small backyard poultry flock as having chickens positive for H5N2.
State Veterinarian Bill Barton says the backyard flock was destroyed earlier this week. He declined to say how many birds the flock contained.
Authorities say there is no immediate threat to the public and that poultry, meat and egg products are safe to eat because they're unaffected by influenza.
