PARIS (AP) — Downhill world champion Marion Rolland will not be defending her title next month after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.
Rolland, who crashed during a World Cup super-G in Cortina d'Ampezzo on Monday, will miss the world championships after a scan revealed the seriousness of the injury.
"I was hopeful that doctors would not confirm what I felt, but that was being utopian," Rolland said in a statement on Wednesday. "I immediately felt the tearing in my knee before I fell and finished in the safety nets."
Rolland will rest for a month to allow the swelling on her knee to go down before undergoing surgery.
The 32-year-old Frenchwoman received treatment on the same knee two years ago, and missed the Olympic Games in Sochi last year.
"I'm in good spirits, I don't regret having tried my luck because I could not imagine ending my career after my previous injury," Rolland said.
The world championships are being held in Beaver Creek and Vail, Colorado, from Feb. 2-15.
