The cost of health insurance is going up, while the number of Utah companies offering it to their employees is going down significantly, according a recent national study.
No surprise there!
But, the report by the Minnesota-based Robert Wood Johnson Foundation once again underscores the critical need for comprehensive health care reform in Utah, as well as the nation.
In Utah, the job now rests with a special legislative task force that meets for the second time tomorrow. The assignment: to have proposed overhaul legislation ready by November! The group's goals of transparency, affordability and portability are laudable. But, where the lawmakers' efforts will end up, especially in view of the many special interests tugging at them, and in the time frame required, will be a major test of their individual and collective statesmanship.
KSL is particularly concerned about the mechanics of the process. They've promised to reach out to all of the stakeholders involved, but will they, and to what extent? Do they the resources in terms of staff and paid consultants to make wise decisions?
The task, frankly, is daunting, yet the consequences of doing nothing, or even delaying a decision, are unacceptable. Still, KSL holds out hope, along with all Utahns, that
