LAS VEGAS (AP) — Federal investigators say the pilot of a Las Vegas police helicopter that crashed on a residential street on New Year's Eve reported a loss of engine power before attempting an emergency landing. The impact of the crash sheared the tail from the single-engine helicopter, but officers David Callen and Paul Lourenco escaped serious injury.
ELKO, Nev. (AP) — State and federal officials are investigating the death of a contract worker in an accident at an underground gold mine in northeast Nevada. Newmont Mining Corp. spokeswoman Mary Korpi (KOHR'-pee) confirmed Monday that one employee was killed in the accident in a vent shaft at the Leeville mine north of Carlin Sunday afternoon.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is scheduled to visit Nevada this week as he gears up for a possible presidential bid in 2016. The Republican lawmaker is planning to visit Las Vegas on Friday evening and Saturday morning, although campaign staffers haven't provided his itinerary for that stop. He'll then head up to Reno, where's he's hosting a gathering at Campo restaurant on Saturday.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — As exhibitors at the International CES showcase for consumer electronics packed up their booths last week, workers were already recycling what was left behind. Attendee badges are made into hotel room keys. Massive magnetic signs are ground up and made into new magnets. Vinyl banners are turned into ice-skating rink covers to shade tarps.
