RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno authorities are warning the public to stay off the ice after the death of a 13-year-old boy who fell through the ice on a frozen lake.

The 13-year-old boy was submerged for more than a half-hour Thursday in south Reno before he was pulled out and rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

His 12-year-old companion was able to pull himself from the icy waters and call 911.

Reno Fire Department spokesman Tim Spencer says though people expect ice to be thick in winter, the ice is thinner and more dangerous because of recent warmer temperatures.

He urges anyone who witnesses someone falling through the ice to call 911. He says instead of trying to reach the victim, people should assist them from shore by extending rope or another object.
