HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A new scholarship program will help medical students at Marshall University with educational expenses.

The Huntington school says the scholarship was created by 1984 medical school graduate and 2014 distinguished alumnus Dr. Doug Phillips. He is currently a professor of radiology at the Weill Cornell Medical College/New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York. The fund honors his parents — Clifford and Angelia Phillips, lifelong West Virginia residents who reside in Randolph County.

The recipient of the award will be an entering first-year medical student with preference to a resident of Randolph County. A student in surrounding counties of Barbour, Pendleton, Tucker, Webster or Upshur will receive second preference.

The award is renewable for three additional years.
