TREVISO, Italy, Jun 27, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- An Italian couple may sue the priest who sent the wife home from their son's baptism because her skirt was too short.

Chiara Limido ended up missing most of the ceremony while she went home and changed her outfit, the ANSA news agency reported. Her son and another infant were getting baptized at the same time.

"I tried to keep cool, out of respect for the other family present," her husband, Randolfo told an Italian newspaper. "The priest is entitled to apply a dress code in his church. But he subjected my wife to public humiliation -- blackmail even."

A friend described Mrs. Limido's dress as a respectable black outfit that covered her shoulders. The friend said that, while the skirt was a few inches above the knee, that seemed sensible during a heat wave.

The Rev. Loris Fregona, the priest involved, said he was only trying to protect Mrs. Limido and that he sees no need to apologize.
