NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Police in North Las Vegas say a 16-year-old girl is hospitalized with broken bones and other injuries but is expected to recover after deliberately jumping from a freeway pedestrian overpass.

Sgt. Chrissie Coon says authorities tried for nearly an hour to talk the girl off a railing of the Gowan Road walkway over Interstate 15 before she plunged about 25 feet to the pavement about 7:15 a.m.

Traffic had been stopped during the incident. All northbound lanes of the busy freeway were closed at Cheyenne Avenue and several southbound lanes were shut down.

The girl's name wasn't made public. Coon says she's being treated at University Medical Center.

Coon says crisis negotiators got close enough to grab the girl's clothing, but she unzipped her sweatshirt to free herself to fall.
