DALLAS (AP) — A 9-year-old boy shot in the face last year has returned home in time for Christmas after his fourth surgery.

KXAS-TV in Dallas reports (http://bit.ly/1CHydZX ) that D.J. Maiden is still recovering after he was wounded in September 2013. The gunman confessed to the shooting, but his motive remains unclear.

His latest surgery has allowed him not to eat through a feeding tube.

But he still has a long way to go. D.J.'s grandmother, Sharon Locklin, said he looked at a photo of the family from before the shooting and asked if he would ever look like that again.

Locklin says her Christmas wish is for him to be happy. The family has received get-well cards from across North Texas.
