Stanford upsets No. 9 Texas in overtime 74-71

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas coach Rick Barnes expected proper screens. He wanted crisp movement.

He received neither.

When the ninth-ranked Texas Longhorns needed an open 3-pointer to tie Stanford Tuesday night, they heaved two guarded attempts on their final possession and lost 74-71 in overtime.

"But we didn't screen and we were too slow moving," Barnes said.

Guards Javan Felix and Demarcus Holland missed the shots, and Stanford had its first road win over a top-10 team since 2008.

Anthony Brown wasn't aggressive enough when Stanford (7-3) lost at BYU last week, so he vowed to make an alteration for the next game, at Texas (10-2).

"I wanted to have no regrets," Brown said.

The Cardinal forward scored a season-best 25 points, including the go-ahead basket in overtime. He converted all four of his 3-point attempts.

Guard Chasson Randle supplemented Brown with 22 points, and he also made a clutch shot in overtime.

Brown converted all four of his 3-point attempts, but his final basket, with 1:08 remaining in overtime, was on a drive inside.

After Felix missed a 3-point shot, Randle made a jumper with 10 seconds left for the final margin of victory.

Felix led Texas with a season-high 19 points. He made some big shots in the second half. Guard Kendal Yancy and forward Jonathan Holmes scored 14 apiece.

Holmes created the overtime with a jump shot from the free throw line with 25 seconds remaining.

Stanford had taken the lead 31 seconds earlier on a jumper by Randle from around the foul circle.

Randle and Brown repeatedly made step-back jumpers when they appeared to be well-guarded by Texas. Randle's final shot was one of them.

"I wanted to create some space," Randle said. "I knew if I got that, I was going to get the shot."

Texas outshot Stanford 52.2 percent to 38.7 in the first half, but the game was tied at the break, 31 apiece. Stanford compensated for missed shots with eight offensive rebounds and a 9-0 edge in second chance points for the half. Forward Travis Reid snagged five of them. Reid finished with 14 rebounds, six on offense.

"I thought those guys were tougher," Barnes said. "From start to finish."

And better shooters when it mattered. Felix missed two 3-pointers in the final 45 seconds. Holmes didn't take a shot in the final three minutes.

"We don't rely on one person to take over the game or take the majority of the shots," Felix said. "I just knew that when I get an open shot I'm supposed to take it."

Barnes said he wanted Holmes to have the ball more.

'We were trying to play through Jon," Barnes said. "We had a couple of post guys who did not execute. Not just screens, but being where you are supposed to be."

TIP-INS

Texas: Point guard Isaiah Taylor had x-rays Tuesday on his broken left wrist. The wrist is healing properly, but there is no date set for his return, a team spokesman said. Taylor and coach Rick Barnes have said they hope the return date is Jan. 3 for the Big 12 opener at Texas Tech. In the meantime, the cast is gone, and Taylor will wear a protective sleeve. Taylor suffered the injury late in the third game of the season against Iowa on Nov. 20 in New York's Madison Square Garden.

Stanford: The Cardinal snapped a frustrating streak on Tuesday by not falling into a double-digit hole in the first half. The most Stanford trailed by was seven. Stanford suffered double figure first-half deficits in its previous four games, losing to DePaul and BYU and beating Denver and Loyola Marymount.

TEXAS INJURIES

Texas forward Jonathan Holmes lost a tooth but was able to finish the game. Center Cam Ridley left the game with 6:51 remaining in regulation and did not return. He received three stiches over his left eye.
