COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A northern Idaho man who threatened to kill his ex-wife if she didn't give him $25,000 for back surgery has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The Coeur d'Alene Press reports (http://bit.ly/13X5AK7) that 62-year-old Larry Alan Taylor of Post Falls received the sentence last week in 1st District Court.

Taylor must serve four years before becoming eligible for parole.

He pleaded guilty in October to attempted grand theft by extortion. He has a long criminal history, and has been booked into the Kootenai County jail 30 times since 1995.

Police say they started investigating after Taylor called his daughter threatening to kill her mother.

Authorities say a police detective made a ruse phone call and recorded Taylor making additional threats against his former wife.
