WASHINGTON (AP) — The fate of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl now rests with a top U.S. general in North Carolina who will decide if the soldier should be charged with desertion after he left his Afghanistan post in 2009 and was captured by the Taliban. The charge of desertion during wartime carries a maximum penalty of death. But the Army says the general has a range of options.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — The daughter of a 66-year-old man rescued by two bystanders from his submerged car in an Idaho lake says her family is grateful to the two people she calls "Christmas angels." Ronda Lyons of Seattle tells the Coeur d'Alene Press that her father Dan Lyons is expected to make a full recovery after he was pulled Saturday from Lake Coeur d'Alene.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Authorities in southwest Idaho are searching for a dark-colored pickup police say is involved in a fatal hit-and-run. Police say the pickup on Sunday morning struck and killed 66-year-old John Perkins of Boise as he crossed a street at a Boise intersection. Witnesses said the large pickup has off-road lights on its top and a loud exhaust.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — The east entrance of Yellowstone National Park is now open for the winter season. The National Park Service announced that snowmobiles and snow coaches may now travel from the park's East Entrance over Sylvan Pass to Fishing Bridge Junction. They warn, however, that winter weather can force road closures.
