NEW YORK (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have ended the New York Yankees' 15-year streak as Major League Baseball's biggest spenders and will pay more than $26.6 million in luxury tax. The Dodgers finished with a record payroll of $257,283,410, according to final calculations made by Major League Baseball and obtained by The Associated Press. That is more than $20 million above the previous high, set by the Yankees last year.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations says pitcher Jake Peavy (PEE'-vee) has agreed to a $24 million, two-year contract to stay with the World Series Champion Giants. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the agreement had not yet been announced. Peavy was traded to San Francisco on July 26 and was part of the team that won the championship.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees acquired pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, outfielder Garrett Jones and minor league pitcher Domingo German from the Miami Marlins on Friday for versatile Martin Prado (mar-TEEN' PRAH'-doh) and pitcher David Phelps. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta is the third member of the team diagnosed with mumps. He's tested positive and remains in isolation. Teammates Sidney Crosby and Beau Bennett were diagnosed with mumps in the last week.
VAL GARDENA, Italy (AP) — American alpine skier Steven Nyman has continued his winning ways on the classic Saslong course in Italy by winning a third World Cup downhill there. His other wins on the course came in 2006 and 2012. He has never won anywhere else.
