AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A former first grade teacher in Austin has been sentenced to 16 years in prison in a child sex case.

The Austin American-Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/1Asyvjg ) 45-year-old John Vasquez received the punishment on Wednesday. A jury on Tuesday found him guilty of indecency with a child by contact and improper relationship between an educator and student. He will have to register as a sex offender upon his release.

Two 10-year-old girls testified that Vasquez sexually abused them when they were 6-year-olds in his class.

Vasquez's attorney says his client had a rough upbringing and has served in the Marine Corps.
