Jun. 25--A new work of art is expected to join the N.C. Museum of Art's permanent collection, thanks to a gift from the Contemporaries, the museum's young adult group (an ever-expanding concept now defined as 20 to 40-something). It's the first time they have raised money to buy a piece to donate.

The group selected a work by New York artist Devorah Sperber titled "After the Mona Lisa 2." It's made with more than 5,000 spools of thread manufactured in North Carolina.

The Contemporaries chose it after considering a selection guided by Linda Dougherty, the museum's contemporary art curator, and an Atlanta gallery owner.

Pending an OK from a museum committee, the art should be hung this fall.
